The German response was only what was described as ‘light shelling’, rather than something heavier after such a raid.

Congratulations poured in from higher headquarters and Pompey Elliott came to visit and express his satisfaction with the exploit and the men who performed so well. John Wadeson received the MC, Charles Palmer and Leo Powell the MM.

On 25 June the battalion war diary made the first reference to a planned raid at Ville-sur-Ancre, when Pompey Elliott went to look at the location. Next day, as the battalion was preparing to be relieved, a heavy bombardment fell and killed two men and wounded five more. After the rifle companies were out of the line, Jack Scanlan went to Elliott’s headquarters to be briefed on the intended operation and members of the Intelligence Section went to observe the intended target area.
